Dear Bandheads, In my ongoing struggle to become a better human, I quit smoking on November 1st after twenty-one years of a pack-and-a-half-per-day habit. Big, fat, hairy deal, right? Well, this fundamental change in my brain chemistry has temporarily (I hope) altered my ability to do anything productive. It seems silly, unless you've been there, that such a positive change for your health should have such a debilitatinig effect on your brain...
Chemical-Free Apathy
Truth is, I'm having a real hard time caring about your music, or any of this online shit right now. Not very good timing for a confession, I'll admit, what with our fundraiser coming up this Friday at The New Way (thanks to the selfless act of faith by Riverside Drive and The Kingsnakes). But speaking truth to music has always been more important to me than spewing fluff for anyone's entertainment. I've grown very weary of providing content for content's sake.
I could drop a load on you about how important it is for you to get involved in your local music scene, how important it is for you to contribute to MB - but the truth is that it really isn't that fucking important. It's just music, and though it may play too large a role in our lives, it doesn't in the lives of average consumers. And that's what we're talking about here, isn't it? People who buy music. Our only concern as a music "scene" is how do we get people to buy local music, specifically your music? How do we get average people to care about your music? Why should they care? Tell me. You have a comments button, you can submit an article, you have a fully-interactive free local music site - use the fucker.
Over the past year, Michiganbands.com has become just another unwelcome responsiblity in my life - not the musical adventure I'd first envisioned. It's no longer a harmless hobby but a source of constant worry and stress to me. And worry, coupled with a drastic change in lifestyle (no drinking either - it'll make me want to smoke), has eroded the quality of my concentration to the point of still confusion.
I really hope my chemical-free apathy will pass and my passion for the music will return. I hope I can find one more reason to volunteer my time to this nearly fruitless pursuit. But if I don't, who could blame me? Let some young fucker without a regular job or family responsibililties play the role of True Believer for you all. I've done my part.
Ok, I'm going out to see KilKenny blast The Hayloft now. That should help. Thanks for letting me vent.
Yours Truly,
Mitch

I'm looking forward to being at the MB fundraiser on Friday (took the night off work) and meeting you and all present. I believe in what you are doing and all of what this website is all about. I stop by everytime I'm on line and read all the articles and most of the posts. I look forward to reading your articles with pleasure. I'll be there, supporting MB and the local music scene!

Now that I've recovered from my whining, after a night of carousing (seems I can drink and not smoke, whattaya know?) at The Hayloft (details to follow), I feel much better and appreciate your support. I'll see you at The New Way this Friday. |

Oh, Mitch, I know what your going through. Quitting smoking is the hardest thing I've ever done. I quit on November 1 of last year (interesting) and even today, I still want one. But I don't just want to respond to that issue. The quote I posted above is the exact issue I want to address with this "revolution" idea. It's not my crusade, or MY anything, but lack of public interest is the major reason local music suffers. The average musician doesn't care about the public, except finding ways to make them buy their music. The idea is, to let the public know that YOU care about THEM. Let your community know that you care about it, and are willing to help it flurish. We've done a number of charity/benefit/fundraiser shows, some for local charities, like shelters and childrens' hospitals, or national charities, like the Crones Colitus Foundation of America. Not only does this give Joe Shmoe a reason to come and see your show, but if he likes you, he'll either buy a CD, or come see you the next time he hears about one of your shows. Giving back to the community not only makes you feel good, but the community feel good. And we all want to feel good, don't we? Can't wait to meet you on Friday, Mitch!! |

Congrats on the "Big step" to a healthier lifestyle. I to quit aug. 11th, the day after that big party I had. You remamber, you were there. Just remember, your allowed to be bitchy for a while after you quit smoking. It gets easier though,and pretty soon the craveings stop to.{or at least get a lot less frequent and don't last long}
With a little luck, it will be the hardest thing you ever have to do. So be proud, be damn proud!
