Harmony House to Close For Good
After serving Michigan music consumers for 55 years, Harmony House will be closing it's doors for good. Company executives cite slipping sales, internet music piracy and the encroachment of big-block entertainment stores according to a report on local news. Twenty-two stores, employing over 200 people will be closed by year's end.

One thing the local news did not mention, however, is how it will effect local artists, many of whom depend on Harmony House as an essential part of their local distribution scheme.

Here's your chance to get involved. Use the "Comments" button below to tell us how you feel about the closing of Harmony House.

Closed for Good? Good Riddance!
Although Harmony House was (almost) the only game in town for many years I'm glad to see 'em go! They've been overpriced for as long as memory serves me and trust me I've spent a boatload of my hard-earned cash in their outlets.
Yes, I will miss being able to find local music so
easily but that's what INDEPENDENT record stores are for and I can always buy my CD's directly from the local artists, cutting out the middle man!
I would much rather hand over my cash to the band who worked so hard on their project than to give some lakefront property fatcat one more dollar!
Goodbye & Good Riddance!!!

I shopped Harmony House up until they closed the Novi store, despite the higher prices. I knew they couldn't compete with the big-box stores on price, but that's only one part of the record-buying experience. What about atmosphere? What about selection? What about people who really care about music? Did you ever try to find something that wasn't played ad-naseum on the radio at Circuit City? You may as well be shopping for CD's at Meijers. I'm sticking with small independents from now on. Screw the big-box stores.

I agree with both of you. The prices at HH were pretty steep.

I think this is going to hurt the indie artists though. Looks like we'll be going back to the day when the bands had to talk to several stores to get their CDs sold. The big problem is getting the CDs in different markets. I don't now how many stores Harmony House had, but I could get CDs by Detroit bands in Flint.

My very dear friend, Reggie Smith, lead vocalist for the Klaver Project,

http://www.fortunecity.com/westwood/idea/622/4f549240.jpg

has been employed by Harmony House for many years. He is definately a local musician who depends on record sales! I have seen him serve his customers just like a friend with a really great collection of his own to share...yes, it is retail sales, but with a personal touch....he can point out the exact location in his store of some of the most obscure materials (including many of Detroit's biggest unknown & otherwise unheard bands!)...he will suffer because of the closing of the Berkley store & those of us who love him suffer with him. Anytime we ever needed to find those tunes we couldn't locate on our own, Reggie could dig it up for us somewhere in his database. He has shared his love of variety in music with many fortunate & thankful Harmony House customers, as well as his generous spirit. Soon he will be a local artist without a 'day-job'. You owe it to yourself to stop by the Woodward Avenue location of Harmony House & meet him if you intend to buy anything more before they go out of business...ask for him & tell him Grace sent you.....the personal service you will receive will let you know how deeply this closing will effect the local artist. Also, make it your priority to see Reggie sing with the Klaver Project this Fiday, July 26 at Detroit's Cadieux Cafe!
GRACE To You!
