You Will Never Get a Record Deal
wiki writes "music & moneyAccording to an article by Bruce Warila over at UnsprungMedia.com, the days of landing a major label record deal by being "discovered" by an A&R rep and given a big, fat cash advance are 'dead over.'  Record companies, like a lot of companies in Michigan these days, are slashing their payrolls of dead wood, reorganizing and re-investing. In the case of EMI, that means 1500 to 2000 jobs are done - over.  That means indie bands will also have to re-think their strategies.  Warila argues that they need to forget about finding a "deal" and start looking to attract investment - just like any other business.  Click "read more" below for a links to three articles about investrment strategies for Indie bands.

Great article by Bruce Warila. I think he's right about using music as a loss leader. The best thing that could happen to you, in the scheme of your investment worthiness, is if ten million people stole your music. By that time, all the right people would be looking at you.

If The Hard Lessons hadn't given music away on their website, I wouldn't know what great songs they have. It's not that I'm against buying music, I buy local indie music all the time. But I had an attitude about recommendations from certain insular quarters that wouldn't have been broached had it not been for the words "free downloads".
